The Worst reasons to marry
On your wedding day, did you believe that you will live together forever? Or you were full of fear and anxiety? According to some surveys, each year many couples go to the altar with the feeling that their relationship is doomed to fail. Researchers were talking with marriage counselors, sociologists and academics that deal with male-female relationships … and they encountered a surprising number of the brides and grooms who were not exactly thrilled when they heard the wedding bells. Carl Weisman collected interviews with the divorced couples in the book “Serious doubts: Why People Marry When They Know It Won’t Last”. He investigated the 1036 divorced couples and found a connection: they all ignored the inner voice that warned – “This will not last”. In the book, he mentioned 11 of the main reasons why people end up in marriage that is doomed to fail.
Keep in mind the worst reasons for entering into marriage, despite the good instincts (according to the survays):
1. You didn’t want to be alone (but did you ever think how lonely you can be in marriage?)
2. You believed that you can not find anyone better than this partner (that is telling more about you and how you think about yourself).
3. You were hoping that he will change in marriage (if you ask me, this is the most stupid one!).
4. You married because of pressure from your parents (very nice, and then you can blame them for your miserable marriage and put responsibility to their shoulders for your divorce…)
5. You married because of financial reasons (I call this “sponsorship”).
6. You married because of unplanned pregnancy (Ooo, this is a good one also, especially in an era with so many contraceptives…)
7. You married because you wanted to escape from the family (nice try:)).
8. You believed that marriage will fix what is broken in relationship (never, it makes it more worse).
9. Your partner pressured you (how someone can pressure you on such a serious step? It’s your life. Learn to say NO!).
10. You wanted children (then you have to think a lot with who you are making them!!!)
11. You thought it’s a logical next step (you are doing that, because everybody is doing that. Is that your logic? Is that logic at all???)
Do you have something else to add?
