The cup is full

I remember an old story I had read once…

A university Professor of Philosophy came to the house of the Zen Master to ask to learn Zen.

“You are very welcome,” said the Master, inviting the Professor in for tea.

As the Master was preparing the tea, the Professor listed all his degrees and experiences and studies, going on and on showing how much he knows also about Zen. The Master stayed quiet all this time, attentively preparing the tea and listening to the monologue.

As the Professor kept talking, the master poured the tea into the Professor’s cup. And he poured…and poured…and poured, until Professor noticed the tea overflowing from the cup.

“What are you doing?” cried the Professor. “The cup is full. No more will go in!”

“Like this cup, you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?” – said to him Zen Master.

Most of us are like the Professor. Our minds are totally full. Until we empty our mind, we will not be able to put new information.

The best way to empty our minds is to practice meditation every day.
