Skiathos, Greece

Skiathos is a small island in the Aegean Sea in Greece. A masterpiece of nature.

Despite its small size (under 50 km²), Skiathos is a popular tourist destination. It has over 60 sandy beaches along the coastline of about 44 km.

Much of the island is forested. The area around the villages and the town are farmland. The island’s forests are pine and are concentrated in the southeastern part of the island. The smell of pines during you are walking to the beach is wonderful. Skiathos is also full of olive-trees. Inhabitants of the island take care about nature and forest very much.

The island Skopelos can be seen from Skiathos and when weather is nice you can also see islands of Euboea and Skyros.

More than 60 sandy beaches on the island! Skiathos has been awarded a numerous prizes for it’s crystal clear water and wonderful beaches. They are marvelous. During the day you can enjoy sun and sea, and during the night almost every day you have organized parties on beaches. A lot of people, very good music, small bars with beverages, even lasers… Everybody dancing, singing…

Lalaria beachLalaria beach is “must see”. Access is by boat only. You can book that excursion everywhere on the island. There are no restaurants or bars on the beach. Only pure beauty for your eyes, body and soul.  It’s a really a gorgeous beach with blue-green sea and white sand.

The magnificent Blue and Dark caves are located just before Lalaria and are worth being visited by boat, too.

Koukounaries beachThen, the Koukounaries beach. It’s the most famous beach of Skiathos. People are saying it’s one of the best beaches in Europe. I think they are right. Long sandy beach with a few taverns along the beach in pine forest. It’s very pleasant to sit in the shade of pine trees, drink famous cold Nescafe… I still think that only in Greece you can drink such a good cold Nescafe! And when you are tired of enjoying in the shade, just few steps and your feet are in the warm sand and in the warm sea…

skiathos townSkiathos Town is built amphitheatrically and it has many narrow streets lined with white houses and their red rooftops. The main shopping street is “Papadiamanti”. Not so many shops, but cafes and bars everywhere! Anyway, a lot of action every night…

On the island you can see also a numerous of old style monasteries and little white chapels, symbols of the islander’s God-fearing piety and spiritual feeling.

Mamma Mia

And finally, if you watched the movie Mamma Mia and if you noticed wonderful nature and sea… well that is Skiathos (some parts are filmed nearby island Skopelos). So, I hope you have now more clear picture about this real wonderful island.
