Wow, she has guts!. That was what I thought when I read about a 16 years old girl (almost woman :) ) who is sailing single handed around the world with her pink lady.
As I told you before, sailing is a men’s world. So, a pink boat named Ella’s is: “ SUPER!”
Also, it is good to see that she is following her dream! I needed 42 years for that…

The last 9 months  I have realized how much knowledge and skills you need for a trip like that. Jessica,  Keep going and I will follow you!

About Jessica Watson:

She is setting out to become the youngest person to sail solo non-stop and unassisted around the World.

Since Joshua Slocum first sailed singlehanded around the world in the late 1890’s, sailors of all nationalities and ages have been drawn to this ultimate challenge: The Everest of sailing.

Slocum’s epic tale of his voyage, “Sailing Alone Round the World”, has captivated a global audience of readers for over a hundred years.

Following on, record-breaking solo circumnavigations by heroes like Francis Chichester and Robin Knox-Johnston have captured the attention and the hearts of people all over the world.

Inspired in her turn by Kay Cottee, the first woman to sail solo non-stop unassisted around the world and by Jesse Martin, the youngest person to do so, Jessica Watson has set her sights on shattering Jesse’s record.

In the process, Jessica hopes to inspire young sailors, adventurers and everyone with a dream in their heart.

Born: 18th May 1993 on the Gold Coast, Jessica currently lives in Buderim Australia.

Attitude: Always make the best of everything, Positive, ask questions, lots of questions.

Interests other than sailing: Anything outdoors and on the water, camping, the beach, reading, cooking, weather, fencing, dingy sailing, boat design and CHOCOLATE!

Thank you for your comment. My dear, no hard feelings :) “As I told you before, sailing is a man’s world” is in connection with a previous post “Penguins and Polar Bears Trek”. There I wrote about man’s stories about sailing and what they are talking about when they are together (or how far they can go in “stupid stories” what make them laugh). Also, it’s a fact, because I am living on a sailing boat, and in every marina I come I see that 95% of the population around me, are men.
I didn’t mention that women are not capable for sailing (or that they are less capable than man); especially I can not say that, because I am a sailing woman and that is my way of life now. And one example: I don’t have that much experience and miles like my Man, but I can dock the boat better than he(I hope he will not see this:)). For your info, docking a boat is something what is always a “drama” and a lot of men are in panic about that…
The point is: I admire any woman who is brave to make such extraordinary step in her life (especially when we are talking about a girl 16 of years old!) Doesn’t matter or that is “sailing around the world” or to say to her Boss:”Now it’s enough, I want a higher salary!” :)
And finally, I am also proud of Jessica Watson, because she put some typical “women things” in her trip like her pink lady “Ella’s” :) . I see her also like a trend setter woman in sailing…
My well-intentioned advice to you: before you start to judge about someone (in your life), inform yourself a little bit more and then shoot baby! :) Anyway, I don’t have that judgmental attitude in my life toward people. I accept people like they are and I think that because of that my life is easier. One dear friend from the marina said to me before he went to do crossing to the Carribian:”If we want to grow and to develop ourselves, one of the ways is to learn to accept people like they are”.

You said, “As I told you before, sailing is a men’s world.” I beg to differ and in my opinion it is that very attitude from you and people like you that has always put women under pressure of having to prove themselves when they really don’t have to. Get it right and shake off your old fashioned stereo-typing attitudes. Sailing is NOT a man’s world. We are all capable. More people (men or women) should draw inspiration from Jessica’s example and less should listen to negative cynisism from people like you. You should spend some time reflecting on the things you say here and be mindful of the bigger picture.
