Puerto de Mogan – Gran Canaria Island

Posted on January 2 2010 by Ellad2

This small place is located on the south-west coast and has excellent clime during whole year. Summer daytime average temperatures are normally in the high twenties to mid-thirties Celsius, usually with a refreshing sea-breeze. In winter, temperatures are only a few degrees lower.

For me, this is the only place on whole Gran Canaria Island with a soul. It’s totally different than other tourist places like: Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico, Maspalomas, Meloneras, or even capital city Las Palmas.

Small buildings (two floors) have roof terraces and gardens. A lot of flowers all around (hibiscus, bird-of paradise, bougainvillea…), palms… It is built around a marina and fishing harbor, with a lot of restaurants around.

Channels between the marina and the fishing harbor, passing under arches in the buildings and between the port and the beach. Because of that, they call this place the “Venice of the Canaries”. Very charming place.

Every Friday they have a “market day” where people (most of them Moroccans and Chinese) selling different kind of products. Nothing special, nothing typical for Spain or this part of Spain, but tourists buying… At Fridays, whole place is covered with little stands, where you can buy clothes, handmade jewelry, bags, shoes, curtains, wooden statues…

Who is coming? Mostly, older people, because it’s very quiet place. It’s an old fishing port. Still you can see early in the morning fishermen are going to fishing. Unfortunately, there are only two traditional fishing restaurants and what is sadder it’s that tourists spending more time in other restaurants where they serve food what they can eat in their countries. I can’t understand that… I am the one who always looking for traditional food, restaurants, places, typically for place where I am. Maybe I am a minority?

Puerto de Mogan its very nice marina for all kind of yachts. A lot of sailing boats come in this marina every year at November before they join the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC) or crossing the Atlantic Ocean on their own.

During the Christmas and New Year, place is totally full of tourists. They booked their vacation few months before.

So, if you want to relax yourself and escape from cold winter days in your countries, this place is ideal.
