Lanzarote Island – Canary Islands
As with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin. Due to the recent eruptions during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many parts of Lanzarote appear to be from another world, often described as ‘lunar’ or ‘Martian’.
The dry climate (and lack of erosion) means that the Volcanic Landscape appears much as it did just after the eruptions.
This island is not so much occupied with tourists like Gran Canaria or Tenerife. It’s somehow more ‘fancy’ (still). It’s also more expensive. I can say that Lanzarote is what Gran Canaria was 20 years ago. But, on Gran Canaria nothing changed since than, except infrastructure which is really good. I hope that will not happen with Lanzarote. Lanzarote is more ‘human’ to tourists, if you know what I mean… Also, the concept of tourism is different and I hope it will stay like that… I don’t like the way of ‘shopping malls entertainment’ what you can see on Gran Canaria.
Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca and Papagayo.
Jameos Del Agua, located in the north of Lanzarote, is part of the Atlantida volcanic cave system formed by the eruptions of the Corona volcano about 3000-4000 years ago. It’s absolutely wonderful place. They made a restaurant in the cave, where you can enjoy in the unbelievable silent during the day and a lot of fun during the night.
The underground salt water Lagoon, Jameo Chico, is host to a Species of Blind Albino Crab that is found nowhere else. You need a time to see them in the water, but when your eyes used on dark, then you will see a lot of little white crabs.
, is a must! Like you are on other planet! You will see lava everywhere, interesting shapes, now silent volcanoes…You will see ‘how hot’ the area is (temperatures just a few meters below the surface reach between 400°C and 600°C).
Timanfaya National Park
Dry brush thrown into a hole in the ground catches fire immediately, while water poured into a bore hole erupts seconds later in the form of steam – like a mini-geyser.
The ‘El Diablo’ restaurant provides an impressive backdrop to all of this and serves Canarian food which is cooked using geothermal heat (A cast-iron grill placed over a large hole in the ground).
is located in the northern part of Lanzarote. The Park is set in 45,000 sq meters of gardens, waterfalls and ponds and is home to many species of birds, animals, reptiles and fish. It’s wonderful place with so mach sounds of birds and animals. You can watch the parrot show and enjoy in interactive communication with a ‘parrot’s teacher’.
Guinate Tropical Park and Penguin Paradise
You almost forget that you are on Lanzarote, you can have impression that you are somewhere in South America for example…
Then, Lanzarote Aquarium, the largest aquarium in the Canary Islands. Amazing! You can dive inside the tank with Sharks, Rays and Groupers.
These are only a few things what is good to see on the island. You can also visit fields with aloa vera and see how magnificent and healthy is that plant and how to use it. Then cactus gardens, then El Golfo – a volcanic crater filled by sea water… Really, a lot of things to see on this island.
